Expect Much Bigger Box Office From 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

Captain America The Winter Soldier box office

It seems that as long as Marvel continues making movies, they'll continue to dominate the box office, and the comic giant's latest offering, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," is no exception.

Industry analysts are predicting that the sequel to 2011's "Captain America" will rake in between $80 and $85 million on its opening weekend next month, with more bullish prognosticators estimating it could make as much as $90 million. That's a big bump from the first flick, which took in $65 million in its initial outing, though such a stark increase in ticket sales has been a continuing Marvel trend in recent years.

Last year's "Iron Man 3" raked in $174 million, marking the second-highest opening of all time (behind Marvel's other colossal hit, "The Avengers," which made $207 million in 2012), and went on to make 95 percent more than "Iron Man 2." The "Thor" franchise has also enjoyed a spike, with "The Dark World" taking in 40 percent more than its predecessor and making $86 million on its opening weekend last fall.

Variety reports that analysts are also taking into account "Captain America"'s positive word of mouth -- a recent press screening elicited rave reviews -- and potentially broad reach, with stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Robert Redford all appealing to different groups of moviegoers. While prognosticators will have to wait a few more weeks to see if their specific predictions pan out, it seems a safe bet that both analysts and audiences will be pretty happy once "The Winter Soldier" arrives.

(Marvel has also reportedly settled on a release date for "Captain America 3," putting the flick head-to-head with "Batman vs. Superman" on May 6, 2016. There's no telling who'll win that box office shoot-out, but expect lots of popcorn to fly that weekend.)
