Children of the '80s can rest assured that their beloved "Annie" is in good hands, judging by the teaser below, which aired last night on Entertainment Tonight.
Quvenzhané Wallis stars as the eponymous orphan who manages to escape the clutches of Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz) and find a permanent home with Benjamin Stacks (Jamie Foxx). We get a little taste of the young Oscar nominee's singing chops and onscreen energy, Foxx's modern-day take on Daddy Warbucks, and Diaz trying to bring some mean Miss Hannigan realness to the situation.
Comedian, actress, and singer Carol Burnett absolutely killed it as Miss Hannigan in the 1982 movie, and we'll absolutely miss her blowsy, boozy take on the character. We got a peek at Diaz's updated Miss Hannigan on Twitter a few months ago, and it's not clear how effective her transformation will be. On the other hand, we've seen Diaz get nasty in dark comedies like "Bad Teacher," so who knows? Chances are great that we'll be too distracted by Quvenzhané Wallis's adorability to miss
How will "Annie" translate to the 21st century? The original movie was based on a Broadway show, and that was based on a comic strip from the '20s. It's definitely a product of the Depression era, so it will be interesting to see how things like Miss Hannigan's orphanage is updated. On the other hand, today's economy ain't so hot either.
The sun will come out for "Annie" on December 19.
