You guys, the future is the worst!
"The Maze Runner" is the first in a trilogy of books by James Dashner about a dude named Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) who's tossed into a weird new world called the Glade. The Glade's main feature (other than a lack of adults, it seems) is that it's in the middle of a maze, and no one's ever gotten out of the maze alive, and also there are terrifying creatures lurking in and around the maze. It's a real "Lord of the Flies" sort of sausage fest up in here -- until Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) shows up.
It's clear that Thomas and Teresa are there to shake things up, but first they've gotta figure out some stuff. Like, who are they? Do they already know each other? What exactly is slithering around that maze, anyhow? Why will it take them three books (and presumably three movies) to escape the maze, and who will die in the process?
Like many dystopian YA novels, "The Maze Runner" has its own social system and nomenclature that sound important and scary and are difficult to sum up in an elevator pitch. Suffice it to say, "The Maze Runner" will be a refreshing change of pace for all of you who have grown tired of cool female heroines like Katniss and Tris and Wonder Woman. Oh, wait...
