Oscars 2014: John Travolta Mispronounces Idina Menzel's Name, Internet Gives Birth to 'Adele Dazeem'

For whatever reason, awards show presenters often have a difficult time reading their lines off a teleprompter, but John Travolta may have just earned himself the superlative of Worst Introduction Ever thanks to his ridiculous, confusing mangling of performer Idina Menzel's name during the Oscars telecast Sunday night.

Travolta was onstage to introduce Menzel, who was performing Best Original Song nominee (and eventual winner) "Let It Go" from "Frozen." His statement started off fine enough -- he even got in a reference to Menzel's Tony-winning role in the musical "Wicked" -- but completely unraveled when faced with saying Menzel's name.

Travolta's interpretation of the unique moniker came out as "Adele Dazeem" or "Adele Dazim," depending on how you want to spell that fictional person's name. We understand that "Idina Menzel" isn't exactly "Jane Smith," but didn't Travolta rehearse saying it even once? (In this photo taken backstage at the Dolby Theatre, Travolta sure looks like he's studying his intro.) And where did the initials A.D. come from?

Understandably, the Internet wasn't going to let it go (sorry), and parody Twitter accounts for Adeles Dazeem and Dazim popped up immediately. Those names also trended for a while on the microblogging site, and videos, Vines, and GIFs of the flub quickly circulated.

We're thankful that Travolta's gaffe contributed to the night's spontaneity and hilarity, though we're honestly wondering how on earth he could have made a mistake so glaring. Maybe it was the Saturday Night Fever. (Again, sorry.)
