One of the better, more slept on action extravaganzas of last summer was Fox's "The Wolverine." Originally envisioned as Darren Aronofsky's follow-up to "Black Swan" (before he ditched it in favor of "Noah"), the film was eventually directed by jack-of-all-trades James Mangold, who gave super mutant Logan an emotionally grounded, stand-alone story set in modern day Japan. Until the movie loses its mind in its third act, it's arguably one of the better "X-Men" installments in the history of the franchise. Thankfully, despite a somewhat underwhelming box office return, Fox, Mangold, and star Hugh Jackman all seem to be on board for a follow-up. But when would that come out, exactly? Mangold clarified, on Twitter, of all places (via Coming Soon).
To backtrack for a moment: this summer's wacky time travel epic "X-Men: Days of Future Past," which features Jackman's Wolverine in a pivotal role, is the precursor to a sequel, the already-dated 2016 release "X-Men: Apocalypse." So where, exactly, another Wolverine stand-alone movie would fit in is somewhat up in the air. Well, a random fan asked James Mangold on Twitter and he, somewhat surprisingly, answered.
Mangold tweeted: "We are figuring it all out. At the moment, I'm shooting the next #Wolverine after #XmenApocalypse." So there you have it. That will be coming, at the earliest, in 2017. Thank goodness Wolverine and Jackman are ageless wonders.
"X-Men: Days of Future Past," which features the casts of Bryan Singer's first two "X-Men" movies and Matthew Vaughn's swinging '60s "X-Men: First Class" and a seemingly confusing, mildly infuriating time travel plot, opens on May 23, 2014
