J.J. Abrams Easily Wins Battle of the 'Star Wars Day' Video Selfies (VIDEO)

Yesterday, as we all know, was Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you), and even though the initial cast was announced for the forthcoming, overwhelmingly anticipated "Star Wars: Episode VII" didn't mean that director J.J. Abrams couldn't drop in and give the faithful a little treat.

Abrams and his co-screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who famously worked on the screenplays for both "Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" in the original trilogy, unleashed a small "video selfie" wishing fans around the world a happy Star Wars Day. It's pretty brief and awkward but also really cute.

A couple of things, too: can you tell how bummed Abrams is to be away from his family in Los Angeles? Supposedly one of the majorly contentious issues when Abrams signed on was Disney's insistence, for reasons involving a complicated tax incentive, to shoot the new movie in London. (Abrams had lobbied Paramount to shoot "Star Trek Into Darkness" in Los Angeles, a battle he ultimately won but which tacked on unnecessary millions to the final production cost.) "We are desperately missing our families back in California..." Abrams begins. Frowny face!

Secondly, there are telltale signs about the production. Mostly what's interesting is that they're continuing to work on the script. This thing comes out in December of next year, filming begins in earnest next month, and this thing still doesn't have a script? Good golly miss Molly. Also somewhat telling is that Abrams says "as casting announcements continue," which means that yes, there are plenty of roles that have yet to be announced. So everyone that was heated about the lack of females cast in the movie, just be cool: they're coming.

"Star Wars: Episode VII" will be out in December of next year. We hope everyone celebrated Star Wars Day responsibly, and with your favorite astromech droid.
