Earlier this week, news broke that beloved PBS series "Downton Abbey" would be closing up shop after its upcoming sixth season. Now, the producers of the hit British series have officially announced that the show will indeed end.
In an interview with BBC News, creator Julian Fellowes and executive producer Gareth Neame confirmed reports of "Downton"'s end, telling the outlet that it was time to bring the series to its conclusion.
"We wanted to close the doors of Downton Abbey when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans," Neame told the BBC. "We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up."
"The Downton journey has been amazing for everyone aboard," added Fellowes. "People ask if we knew what was going to happen when we started to make the first series and the answer is that, of course we had no idea. Exactly why the series had such an impact and reached so many people around the world, all nationalities, all ages, all types, I cannot begin to explain. But I do know how grateful we are to have been allowed this unique experience."
"Downton" will cap its six-season run with nine episodes, followed by what's being described as a "concluding special" that is set to air in the U.K. on Christmas Day. Neame also told reporters that he was "definitely" mulling over the possibility of a "Downton" spinoff film.
