Scandalous as "Gossip Girl" was in its time, it could have been even more so.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the show's premiere, "Gossip Girl" creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz, along with executive producer Joshua Safran, revealed some new tidbits about their hit CW drama to Vulture. One such factoid was that they had to cut multiple scenes that were considered too risqué by the network. They opened up about two scenes, in particular.
The first was a hookup scene involving Blair (Leighton Meester) and Chuck (Ed Westwick) in a public place. As Safran put it, Chuck was "taking care of Blair under a table." A second one featured a box of sex toys -- an ill-intentioned gift from Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) to Serena (Blake Lively). Apparently, the dildos freaked out both Dan and the actor who played him, Penn Badgley.
"We cut it because you couldn't show them on air," Safran said. "The deleted-scene version, which I don't think we ever put anywhere, is hilarious because they're like a foot and a half long. Penn was really shocked."
Fans might have liked those scenes given the chance to see them, but standards and practices department did not allow it. The "Gossip Girl" team had to say goodbye to them, to their disappointment. However, Safran has bigger regrets. In retrospect, he wishes they had tackled "representation for people of color and gay story lines," he told Vulture.
Unfortunately, what's done is done now that the days of "Gossip Girl" over, but if they ever bring the show back, we'll expect more diversity ... and dildos.
