A remake of "Rosemary's Baby," Roman Polanski's chilling masterpiece of otherworldly dread, isn't the worst idea ever (but it is close).
When NBC announced they were remaking the movie as a miniseries, we were at the very least intrigued: at least it wouldn't be some clumsy, shot-for-shot theatrical job like last fall's abysmal "Carrie" remake. Our interest was piqued further when it was announced that Zoe Saldana would be playing Rosemary, the woman whose closest friends and family conspire to have her give birth to the antichrist. But with the first piece of promo art released by NBC (courtesy of the Daily News), our excitement has been decidedly lessened.
This piece of promo art features Saldana standing in front of a baby carriage. Is this supposed to be after she has the baby? Also, is that a wig?
We're getting flashbacks to 1976's "Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby," a spotty television movie sequel that had Ruth Gordon reprising her role as Minnie and Patty Duke (!) in the role of Rosemary, made famous in Polanski's film by a pixie-ish Mia Farrow. (The whole movie is on YouTube if you're really curious.)
This new "Rosemary's Baby" was directed by Agnieszka Holland, co-stars Patrick J. Adams, Jason Isaacs, and Carole Bouquet and takes place in Paris instead of the original's spacious New York locale. The movie's new tagline? "Fear is born." We'll see.
