Most of Disney's Movies Are Going to Be Really Big (Literally)

Today Disney and IMAX announced a partnership for a slew of their upcoming feature films, continuing a longstanding relationship between the studio and the large-format provider. The movies under agreement also include some hotly anticipated projects that we know precious little about but are still very excited for.

The first movie under this new agreement is next month's superhero sequel "Captain America: The Winter Solider," and will continue this summer with Angelina Jolie's nightmarish fairy tale "Maleficent" and Marvel's whacked out "Guardians of the Galaxy," to which we say, loudly and proudly, WOO! Next summer the partnership will continue, with things like tiny art house movie "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and Brad Bird's still terribly mysterious "Tomorrowland." Oh, and also "Star Wars: Episode VII" in December 2015. So there's that.

"Disney has enjoyed a terrific ongoing collaboration with IMAX, and we are thrilled to extend this relationship with a collection of exciting, highly anticipated cinematic events that are perfect for the immersive IMAX format," said Alan Bergman, President, The Walt Disney Studios, in the press release.

"For the last several years, Disney and IMAX have worked together to deliver extraordinary cinematic experiences to audiences around the world," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond, in the same press release. "The combination of the great product being created by Disney and the overwhelming enthusiasm of moviegoers to see films in IMAX theatres makes this agreement really exciting."

While some people complain about the IMAX surcharge, especially in the not IMAX-specific screen size, seeing a movie in IMAX is almost always superior -- if only for the sound and picture quality alone. As admitted Disney-holics, this news is really, really great. The only thing better than Disney magic is Disney magic on a big-ass screen.
