Fans of '80s nostalgia rejoice -- a "Jem and the Holograms" movie is coming your way! And what's more - you can be a part of it!
First off, some background: "Jem and the Holograms" was a syndicated animated program that ran for 65 episodes (from 1985 to 1988) and followed a music company mogul named Jerrica Benton and her alter-ego Jem, who, along with her band the Holograms, would battle other bands and, of course, corporate espionage. I also remember there being space travel involved but apparently that wasn't part of the original series but something I imagined.
The original series was famous for including music videos and musical numbers in the episodes, which was a response to the popularity of MTV at the time and considered somewhat revolutionary (more than 150 songs were created and 187 videos aired). What?!
Today, director Jon Chu ("G.I. Joe: Retaliation"), producer Jason Blum ("Oculus," "Paranormal Activity") and music mogul Scooter Braun, took to YouTube to both announce the project and to ask for something. "Instead of asking for money, we're asking for your creativity," Chu, who developed a big-screen remake of "Bye Bye Birdie" shortly after graduating from USC and helmed two installments in the "Step Up" franchise, announces on the video.
Fans are encouraged to post two-minute videos of what they loved about the original series, why they love Jem and the Holograms, and what they want to see in the new movie. "We want to see and hear your passion," Chu says in the video.
The other big component is casting -- if you think you are talented and charismatic and a good enough singer, then you can drop a two-minute audition tape and they'll take a look. This isn't some contest, either.
"This is the way we're making the movie," Chu assures everyone watching the video, which is pretty entertaining even if you have no idea who Jem and the Holograms are (Blum, already one of our favorite people in Hollywood, is an absolute hoot).
