New DVD Blu-ray: 'Frozen,' 'American Hustle,' 'Saving Mr. Banks'

new dvd blu-ray

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week

"Frozen"

What's It About? Anna (Kristen Bell) doesn't know why she and her sister Elsa (Idina Menzel) have grown apart over the years. Doesn't she want to build a snowman like they used to do when they were kids? Actually, Elsa is a little too good at building snowmen, because she's the gosh-darn Ice Queen and turns everything to frost when she gets mad or stressed out. Anna goes on a mission to save her sister, along with a dude named Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), his beloved reindeer, and a talking snowman named Olaf (Josh Gad) who just wants a hug.

Why We're IN: This is one of the best Disney movies to come out in years. Even adults are secretly listening to Menzel belt out the Oscar-winning song "Let It Go" on their headphones.

Moviefone's Top Blu-ray of the Week

"The Hidden Fortress"

What's It About? It's hard to pick just one Kurosawa film to gush over, but if you're looking for something with action, humor, and romance -- say, something along the lines of "Star Wars"? -- this is your best bet. Yep, the tale of Princess Yuki Akizuki (Misa Uehara) and the general tasked with protecting her and her family's fortune (Toshiro Mifune) inspired George Lucas's epic trilogy.

Why We're IN: Sure, you can get this on DVD, but don't you want the Blu-ray with all of the Criterion bells and whistles? There's even an interview with Lucas on here about Kurosawa!

New on DVD & Blu-ray

"American Hustle"

What's It About? Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) are con artists and lovers who get nabbed in the act by FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). In turn, Richie forces them to take part in an even bigger hustle trying to snag politicians on the take. Jennifer Lawrence co-stars as Irving's wife Rosalyn, a Long Island beauty with a temper.

IN or OUT: Although this isn't David O. Russell's strongest work, it's entertaining, and the period details are fabulous. Come for Bradley Cooper's perm, stay for Louis CK's interminable ice fishing story.

"Here Comes the Devil"

What's It About? Family fun time is ruined when the two kids disappear during a hike. Sara (Michele Garcia) and Adolfo (Alan Martinez) return the next morning, so no harm done, right? Nope, something pretty awful happened to them in the hills of Tijuana.

IN or OUT: "Here Comes the Devil" snagged a whole bunch of awards at 2012's Fantastic Fest, but reviews since then have been mixed.

"Kill Your Darlings"

What's It About? Daniel Radcliffe stars as Allen Ginsberg as a young writer who's just landed Columbia, but homework gets lost in the shuffle when he hooks up with a dynamic fellow student named Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan). Lucien introduces Allen to Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and William S. Burroughs (Ben Foster), and lots of booze- and drug-fueled creative hijinks ensue. Things get dark when Lucien's old friend (and possible former lover) David starts feeling jealous of Lucien's new pals.

IN or OUT: In, especially for fans of the Beats who were less than thrilled by "On the Road."

"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom"

What's It About? Idris Elba stars as the late Nelson Mandela in this sprawling biopic about the South African activist-turned-politician. Naomie Harris co-stars as Mandela's now-ex wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

IN or OUT: Although the movie itself didn't impress, the performance by Idris Elba is worth a look.

"Saving Mr. Banks"

What's It About? Who knew there was a power struggle behind Mary Poppins? This is the sale of how Walt Disney convinced P.L. Travers to let him bring the character she created to the big screen. And it wasn't with a spoon full of sugar, either. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson star.

IN or OUT: If you dig Disney, this could be just the thing. The rest of us can take a rain check.

New to Blu-ray

"A Brief History of Time" (Criterion)

What's It About? In what's surely a match made in documentary heaven, Oscar-winning director Errol Morris profiles astrophysicist Stephen Hawking.

IN or OUT: This would make a great double feature with "Cosmos."

"The Jungle Book 2"

What's It About? Sometimes, you just crave the "Bare Necessities," you know? That's why Mowgli (Haley Joel Osment) decides to head back to the jungle for a spell, just to regroup and see some familiar furry faces. You know what they say about not going home again? Yeah, Mowgli should probably not go home again.

IN or OUT: An unnecessary sequel. Out.
