It seemed almost too perfect: when Angelina Jolie signed up for "Maleficent," in the role of the iconic villainess from Walt Disney's animated classic "Sleeping Beauty," it was one of those perfect marriages of character and star that only come along every so often. And every glimpse of the live-action movie, a "Wicked"-like tale told from the villainess's point-of-view, reiterates this fact: Jolie is Maleficent. If this is at all in question, just check out our exclusive new featurette.
"When I was a little girl, she was my favorite Disney character," Jolie reveals at the opening of the little behind-the-scenes look. "She had a wicked sense of fun," she later adds.
And based on the footage interspersed between the interviews, it sure does look like this new big screen incarnation doesn't skimp on the ferocity. Jolie is all in, whether cackling wildly or flying over the grassy plains of a fairytale kingdom. Not only does the actress embody the character physically, with the high cheekbones and knot of horns rising high above her head, but she gets the spirit of Maleficent; the stuff that makes her such a magnetic antihero in the first place.
Linda Woolverton, who wrote the script (with some help from Paul Dini), said that she was intimidated not only by the legendary status of the character, but also by Jolie's formidable presence. "My task was to live up to both of them," Wooverton says. By the looks of things, she has.
