7 Things You Need to Know Before You See 'Insurgent'

So you saw "Divergent" a year ago and loved it. Maybe some of you caught it on cable, bought the DVD, or rented it from Redbox recently to catch up. Perhaps you're so confused by the number of young-adult films Shailene Woodley and her co-stars have made, they're jumbling up in your head (is this the one where Miles Teller is a teen alcoholic? No. Is this the one where Ansel Elgort is her brother or her boyfriend?). I happen to know quite a few girls and women who were so distracted by star Theo James they couldn't tell you much about any scene he was in other than "Four is hot."

We get it. You might not remember everything that happened in "Divergent," so we're here to help jog your memory and to prep you for "Insurgent," the second installment in the dystopian trilogy written by Veronica Roth. Remember that - it's a middle book, so there will, once again, be a cliffhanger.

1. Tris and Four are on the run.

The last time we saw Tris and Four, they were jumping on a train "to the end of the line" with Four's estranged father Marcus, Tris's brother Caleb, and Machiavellian jerk Peter. Tris and Caleb had lost both of their parents during the Erudite-led, Dauntless-enforced Abnegation massacre. Newly outed as Divergent, Tris and Four are basically Factionless. In "Insurgent," they must avoid capture by Jeanine Matthews and build alliances with those willing to stand up to the Erudite.

2. Janine Matthews is on a mission.

Tris injured Jeanine Matthews at the end of Divergent, but she didn't kill the ruthless Erudite leader. In "Insurgent," Matthews will stop at nothing to track down and kill all the remaining Divergent, starting of course with Tris and Four. We don't want to give away any spoilers, but what she has in store for Tris is pretty twisted.

3. The Amity folks play a bigger role.

The Amity were only briefly glimpsed in "Divergent," but they're the Faction that believes in peace, trust, farming, and friendship. They're usually thought of as the "Hufflepuff" of the "Divergent" world, but in "Insurgent" it's clear they have a lot to offer. Amity representative Johanna Reyes (Octavia Spencer) plays a huge role in helping the Divergent survive.

4. We finally meet Uriah.

Book fans were disappointed to discover that Tris's fellow Dauntless pal Uriah wasn't featured in the first movie, but he's definitely in "Insurgent." Born to Dauntless, he becomes one of Tris and Four's closest allies. Playing Uriah is Keiynan Lonsdale, a newcomer to Hollywood but a former teen star in his native Australia. He's best known for a two-season role on the hit show "Dance Academy."

5. Peter is still mostly a jerk.

Jeanine Matthews may be the film's central villain, but she's far from the only antagonist in the adaptation. Peter (Miles Teller) may have literally gotten on the train with Tris and Four, but that doesn't mean he's figuratively on board with them. He's not someone Tris and Four can trust, but of course, looks can be deceiving. Other characters for Tris and Four to watch out for include Eric (Jai Courtney) and Evelyn (Naomi Watts), the leader of the Factionless.

6. Meet the Factionless.

Speaking of the Factionless, they kept being mentioned in "Divergent" as a homeless-like group of hungry wanderers. They're supposedly what you devolve into when you're thrown out of or leave your Faction, but in "Insurgent," it's clear they're a lot more than a bunch of vagrants. The Factionless are rebels, and they have a leader with an agenda and even more to be angry about than Tris and Four.

7. Expect betrayals.

What would one of these young-adult dystopian thrillers be without some unforeseen plot twists and character surprises? In "Insurgent," we'll find out that characters are more morally ambiguous than they seem, and sometimes way different than they seemed. Of course this already happened in "Divergent," when it becomes clear Mrs. Prior was born into Dauntless and that Four, like Tris, was Divergent. You've been warned -- be hyperaware when watching "Insurgent," because relationships and identities are bound to change.
