A 'Charmed' Reboot Is Coming to The CW

Alyssa Milano Shannen Doherty And Holly Marie Combs Star In CharmedThe CW is hoping to conjure up some late '90s/early 2000s nostalgia, with reports swirling that "Charmed" is getting a reboot from the network.

Jennie Snyder Urman, the creator and executive producer of The CW's "Jane the Virgin," is writing the project, and working with several other "Jane" creatives on shepherding the new series. The network has already ordered a script for the hour-long reboot.

The new show will be a prequel of sorts, set in 1976, though additional details about the plot -- and the show's connection, or lack thereof, to the original -- are scant right now. Variety calls the series "a re-imagining of the original TV series," while TVLine reports that the reboot follows "three witches who are brought together to fight evil in a small New England town."

TVLine also obtained a reported breakdown of unofficial character descriptions for the main trio, with a more diverse cast than the first "Charmed." It's unclear if the characters are supposed to be related, as they were in the original series.

"Charmed" first ran on The WB (which later merged with UPN to form The CW) for eight seasons, from 1998 through 2006. Its main cast was initially made up of Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano, who starred as Prue, Piper, and Phoebe Halliwell, a trio of good witches. Doherty left the series in 2001, and was later replaced by Rose McGowan, who played half-sister Paige.
