And what's scarier than puberty?
"Stranger Things" Season 2 just dropped its nine episodes the weekend before Halloween, but may fans are already caught up and ready for more. Netflix will hopefully give us Season 3 this time next year, and The Powers That Be teased some of the big themes ahead.
Executive producer Shawn Levy told Collider Season 3 will probably take place a year after the events of the Season 2 finale, just like Season 2 picked up a year after Season 1. Why? Because the real-life cast is aging a year, too, and they want the show to reflect that reality. As Levy put it:
"Let's not embarrass ourselves or the audience by pretending these are kids. They're teenagers now."
The six main "kids" in the cast -- the four boys, plus Eleven and Max -- currently range in age from 13 to 16. Here's more from executive producer Dan Cohen to Collider:
"The passing of time in these kids' lives, and everyone's inner community, is part of the charm of the show, and [The Duffer Brothers] will continue to lean into that."
The Duffer Brothers stayed on the same wavelength when teasing the teens' future to Entertainment Weekly.
MINOR SEASON 2 SPOILER AHEAD
Here's Matt Duffer's puberty tease to EW:
"Even if we didn't want to deal with [puberty], we have to deal with it because our real-life actors are going through it. I think that's exciting because it forces the show to evolve and become something different every year.
It's going to test their friendships. Obviously, like Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Max (Sadie Sink) are together, but really, when you're that age, how long do relationships last? They usually last about two weeks if you're lucky. I think that's going to be fun to explore."
That aspect does sound fun, and true-to-life for normal teens. The rest of what's happening in Hawkins is much less light-hearted or normal, and -- without spoiling anything from the Season 2 finale -- it's going to be interesting to see how they pick up the action this time. A lot can happen in a year...
