Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke May Cameo in 'Mary Poppins Returns'

mary poppins, bert, julie andrews, dick van dyke, mary poppins returnsThe original Mary Poppins may be popping up in Disney's upcoming sequel, "Mary Poppins Returns," and she could be bringing another familiar face, too.

E! News reports that none other than Julie Andrews, who originated the part of the magical nanny in the 1964 Disney musical, will have a cameo in this new film, too. And that's not all: Dick Van Dyke, who played Poppins's sidekick, a chimney sweep named Bert, is also allegedly set for a small role, too.

Just what parts the pair could be playing are being kept top secret for now, and E! reports that a rep for Andrews denied that the actress had any involvement in the flick at all, telling the site there have been "do discussions" between Disney and her team. So we'll take this news with a spoonful of sugar a grain of salt for now.

But cameos from Andrews and Van Dyke would both make perfect sense, and be a great tribute to the original flick, and we do hope they somehow materialize. There's plenty of time for producers to reach out to the legendary actors, since according to E!, the script isn't finished yet, and the flick isn't due to hit theaters for another two years.

If they do join the ensemble, Andrews and Van Dyke would be in good company: Emily Blunt is set to take over the Poppins role, and Lin-Manuel Miranda will be playing a new character, a lamplighter named Jack. Meryl Streep is also rumored to be joining the cast, playing Mary's cousin, Topsy.

"Mary Poppins Returns" is due in theaters on December 25, 2018.
