'Stranger Things'-Themed Bar to Shut Down After Surprisingly Funny Letter From Netflix

Funny isn't exactly the word that comes to mind when one thinks of cease-and-desist letters, but Netflix's legal team managed to write a pretty good one to shut down an unauthorized "Stranger Things"-themed pop-up bar in Chicago.

Called "The Upside Down," the pop-up opened in Logan Square on Aug. 18 for a six-week run. It was created by the team that runs Emporium, an arcade-slash-bar in the square. With "Stranger Things"-inspired drinks and decor, the pop-up paid homage to the hit series and quickly attracted the notice of fans. Seeing the project's success, the Emporium team was interested in extending its run, according to DNAinfo.

Netflix, however, also caught wind of the bar, and the company's legal team quickly put an end to that idea. Although the letter liberally sprinkled in funny "Stranger Things" references, the message was clear: The pop-up should not be extended.

My walkie talkie is busted so I had to write this note instead. I heard you launched a Stranger Things pop-up bar at your Logan Square location. Look, I don't want you to think I'm a total wastoid, and I love how much you guys love the show. (Just wait until you see Season 2!) But unless I'm living in the Upside Down, I don't think we did a deal with you for this pop-up. You're obviously creative types, so I'm sure you can appreciate that it's important for us to have a say in how our fans encounter the worlds we build.

We're not going to go full Dr. Brenner on you, but we ask that you please (1) not extend the pop-up beyond its 6 week run ending in September, and (2) reach out to us for permission if you plan to do something like this again. Let me know as soon as possible that you agree to these requests.

We love our fans more than anything, but you should know that the demogorgon is not always as forgiving. So please don't make us call your mom.

At least it was fun while it lasted. Maybe they'll work with Netflix in the future and bring back The Upside Down as an authorized pop-up. In the meantime, we have the "Stranger Things" Season 2 premiere on Oct. 27 to look forward to.
