Sofia Coppola has made her name as a filmmaker by turning her lens on the lives of teen girls, but it sounds like her next project will take her into virgin territory. The multi-hyphenate is in negotiations to direct "The Little Mermaid," a live-action adaptation of the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
It's not yet clear how kid-friendly this version of "The Little Mermaid" will be. As with most fairy tales, the original story is not nearly as cheery as Disney's, and previous names attached to the project are more commonly associated with more adult fare. Joe Wright, who directed the fabulous teen-centric "Hanna," had been associated with "The Little Mermaid" in years past, and the script has passed through the hands of "Shame"'s Abi Morgan and "Fifty Shades Of Grey"'s Kelly Marcel.
The latest writer to take a crack at the script is Caroline Thompson, who's known for her work on "Edward Scissorhands," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "Corpse Bride," and "The Addams Family." Can we hope for something sweetly spooky in that vein? After all, Ariel's terrible trade-off -- her voice for real love -- isn't that far off from the problems tons of Coppola's characters face. Being a teen is tough, whether you're on land or under the sea.
