Tony Awards 2014: Nominees Include Neil Patrick Harris, Bryan Cranston

The 2014 Tony Awards Nominations CeremonyAre Tony voters secretly fans of TV and animated musicals? Or are TV and movie actors infiltrating Broadway in a rather standout way these days?

Perhaps the raddest nomination goes to former child actor Neil Patrick Harris for his performance as Hedwig in the revival of the gender-bending, glittery, glam rock musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." We weren't sure anyone could fill John Cameron Mitchell's wig, but NPH is killing it on Broadway as the lovelorn East German whose gender reassignment surgery went horribly awry.

Meanwhile, Bryan Cranston grew out his hair and traded the meth lab for the White House as LBJ in "All the Way." He's up against Chris O'Dowd, who snagged a nomination for his performance of bunny-loving Lennie in "Of Mice and Men." Who'd have thunk the former "IT Crowd" funnyman would one day be playing a Steinbeck character? Gosh, he'll never have to ask anyone if they've tried turning it off and on again.

Other notable noms include Idina Menzel for her role in "If/Then." Although younger audiences might know her from "Frozen," she's been a Broadway favorite since her debut in "Rent." Menzel won a Tony for her role as Elphaba in "Wicked," and was nominated for her role in "Rent." Maybe someday she'll be reprising her role as Elsa in a Broadway adaptation of "Frozen"!

Meanwhile, Anika Noni Rose is nominated for her performance in "A Raisin in the Sun." This Broadway acclaim surely doesn't mean she's abandoning her movie career, though. Noni Rose is starring in the upcoming film "Half of a Yellow Sun," and she recently told The Guardian, "I'd like to ride a damn dragon!" Hollywood, get this woman a damn dragon!
