"Star Wars: Episode VIII" is looking at a galaxy far, far away for its lead actress - the galaxy known as television.
The Wrap reports that "Episode VIII" director Rian Johnson is narrowing in on a few names: Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez ("Jane the Virgin"), Emmy nominee Tatiana Maslany ("Orphan Black"), and Olivia Cooke ("Bates Motel," "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl") are reportedly reading for the lead female role opposite "The Force Awakens" star John Boyega this month.
All three are fast-rising stars who have garnered considerable acclaim and award nominations. But it's still very, very early in the casting process, and The Wrap notes that Johnson is still auditioning a number of women for the part.
The pieces are slowing coming together for "Episode VIII"; Benicio del Toro is in talks to star as the movie's big villain. "Episode VIII" is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2017.
