Harrison Ford is usually thought of as delightfully grumpy based on his TV appearances, but his Reddit AMA over the weekend was full of fun and funny nuggets. (Ford was promoting a Showtime series about climate change that aired over the weekend.) Here are a few of the highlights! And as an extra treat, check out Ford playing "Uncharted 3" in Japan a few years ago. You're welcome in advance.
1. Harrison Ford doesn't have ophidiophobia, thank you very much.
Ford's famously fedora'd alter ego Indiana Jones is notoriously scared of snakes. Ford himself? Not so much. "I actually like snakes! When I was young, I was a boy scout nature camp counselor, and one of our projects was collecting snakes and creating an environment for them, so I'm quite familiar with snakes and think they'r[e] fantastic creatures."
2. Han Solo is pretty handy around the house.
Ford was sort of working as a carpenter when he was offered the role of Han Solo in "Star Wars," although he was also trying to make a living as an actor. "I had a house at the time I wanted to remodel, a bit of the wreck of a house. I'd invest money in tools but wouldn't have money for materials, so I realized this was another way of putting food on the table. And allowing me to pick and choose from the acting jobs that were being offered at the time."
3. He still hasn't seen "Anchorman 2."
Ford seemed pretty unimpressed when he was talking about his cameo in "Anchorman 2" a few months ago on Jimmy Kimmel's show. Although it sounds like it was more fun than he'd originally let on, he still hasn't popped "Anchorman 2" in the old DVD player.
"It was goofy. I hadn't seen 'Anchorman,' it was only one day's work, and I knew that it was very popular, and I admired the talents of the people involved, so I went to do it and had a great time, I enjoyed it. I still haven't seen it though."
4. "The Expendables 3" was convenient.
Ford didn't seem particularly jazzed about his part in "The Expendables 3" when on Jimmy Kimmel's show, but it turned out OK.
"I was on my way to Indonesia to do 'Years of Living Dangerously,' and halfway around the world. And the location for Expendables was right on the way, and they asked me for a relatively short period of time, and it seemed like fun. I hadn't seen the films but I looked one of them and [I] thought it was kind of funny, so I thought why not?"
Why not, indeed.
5. Harrison Ford won't divulge secrets!
If you have a secret you need to keep, Ford is your guy. The two most pressing questions about his career surely have to be who shot first at the Mos Eisley Cantina and whether or not Deckard was a replicant in "Blade Runner." As for the first question, he doesn't care, which means we'll be arguing about this over beer until the end of time. The "Blade Runner" question is deeper and more meaningful, and guess what? He'll never tell. "I think that it's a wonderful storytelling mechanism for that question to be left unanswered," he wrote, before quickly folding an origami unicorn and eating it.
6. He's having a better time than we think.
That whole Jimmy Kimmel thing is just one instance of Ford appearing to be uncomfortable about being on TV, at best. He'd like the set the record straight; he's having fun but just not smiling or anything. He wrote, "Oh no, in most cases, those guys are so talented and so funny. I don't hate it at all, in fact it's interesting you would think that because I usually have a really good time. I'm there to bring attention to some project that's about to be released, and it's great to be able to take advantage of that to bring attention to bring attention to the film."
7. Will Deckard be back?
Even though Ford said that "Blade Runner" "was maybe the hardest set I've ever worked on" he'd still be happy to return to Ridley Scott's rainy world. "I'm quite curious and excited about seeing a new script for Blade Runner if in fact the opportunity would exist to do another, if it's a good script I would be very anxious to work with Ridley Scott again, he's a very talented and passionate filmmaker. And I think it would be very interesting to revisit the character." Maybe then we'll finally find out if androids dream of electric sheep.
