Next summer, it will be your patriotic duty to see "Magic Mike XXL": The sequel is set for release on July 3, 2015.
Studio Warner Bros. announced the schedule this week for the follow-up to the 2012 male stripper flick that starred Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, and a whole bunch of greased-up, gyrating guys. Tatum is returning for "XXL," which, like "Magic Mike," will be loosely based on events from his own life.
While Tatum had once considered directing "XXL," the original's first assistant director, Greg Jacobs, will be taking the helm, following in Steven Soderbergh's footsteps. Tatum started work on the script earlier this year, and joked that he was taking inspiration from McConaughey for the sequel. As for the plot, Tatum said last year that it would be more lighthearted than the first film.
"It will be a road-trip movie, and it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama," Tatum told THR last June. "The first one, we had to make not so cheesy and campy; this one we are going to swing for the fences."
