Star Wars fans, welcome the smooth new smuggler in town! Donald Glover has landed the role of Lando Calrissian in the young Han Solo movie, starring Alden Ehrenreich.
Lucasfilm announced the good news, casting the 33-year-old actor ("The Martian," "Atlanta," "Community," soon to be in "Spider-Man Homecoming") as Han's frenemy in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's still-untitled standalone.
"We're so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us," Lord and Miller said in a statement (via StarWars.com). "These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we'd like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever."
Fans first met Lando (Billy Dee Williams) in "Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back." He was a smuggler -- and a skilled pilot -- in his early days, and was the owner of the Millennium Falcon before losing it to Han Solo in a game of sabacc, which we had better see on screen. Eventually Lando became the leader of Cloud City and tricked Han and Leia as part of a trap set by Darth Vader. But he made up for that. Besides, you know Han cheated to win that game.
The Han Solo movie is scheduled to start filming in early 2017 for release in 2018.
