Should There Be a 'Big Little Lies 2'? Director Says No, Stars Want to Cast JLo

Even those of us who read and loved Liane Moriarty's book still got wrapped up in the storytelling of the HBO limited series, and don't want to say goodbye to these characters.

So are we really saying goodbye, or just goodbye for now?

Moriarty didn't write a follow-up book, but there is some hope that the story could continue. "Big Little Lies" co-stars Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern had a Facebook/Instagram live chat before the finale, and Witherspoon addressed the idea of Season 2 (via InStyle):

"One of the main questions everyone keeps asking us is is there going to be a Season 2. We've been talking with the writer, and you guys should Facebook Liane Moriarty and tell her how much you want to see 'Big Little Lies 2.' That would be good. She's thinking about ideas, and so we would love to hear ideas."

Asked who they'd like to see on "Big Little Lies 2," Witherspoon picked Jennifer Lopez. "We thought maybe J.Lo should be in 'Big Little Lies 2,' because I'm a huge fan of J.Lo."

Nicole Kidman told TVLine it would be "a beautiful prospect" to revisit the women of Monterey, but it's up to Moriarty as the author, and David E. Kelley as the series writer:

"So between Liane and David, I would hope that they could come up with something... I mean, it took us six months to shoot this. So we all went, 'Uh... OK!' I think if there was something compelling and extraordinary that they could come up with, then would we want to go and embody these women again? That would be a beautiful prospect. And for us, I think there's also a strength in terms of our friendship. All five of us, there's a very, very strong connection through what it took to get the series made, you know? But there's certainly nothing [about Season 2] now, nothing that's solid or anything. I mean, it was a lot to get it to this point! [Laughs] There are so many moving parts to this series that would be impossible not to have again. And who knows if it's meant to be finite? But all of us, I think, feel so connected to it. And that it's had an impact, that it's penetrated the very, very dense world of television... there are so many shows! But I love that people are responding to it. I love the emotional attachment to it. It's very rare."

However, one big problem witih "Big Little Lies" Season 2 is that it would most likely lose its director, Jean-Marc Vallee, 'cause he has no interest in continuing the story. Here's part of his Q&A with The Hollywood Reporter:

The last scene with the women being watched on the beach is open-ended. Reese recently mentioned there being talks for a season two and that author Liane Moriarty has some ideas of what that could look like. Would you want to direct a Season 2?

The detective doesn't want to let go and that's how we finish that. And we think, "Did they do the right thing? What will happen?" Now it's up to the audience and their imagination to figure out. To do a Season 2, I'm not for it. Let's move on and do something else! If there's an opportunity to reunite with Reese, Nicole and these characters of course, I'll be a part of it, but Big Little Lies One is a one-time deal. Big Little Lies Two? Nah. The end is for the audience to talk about. Imagine what you want to imagine and that's it. We won't give you a Season 2 because it's so good like this. Why spoil it?

He doesn't even sound on the fence about it. It's a shut door. And maybe he's right?

Would the stars be willing to return without their beloved director, even if a new story emerged? HBO would probably want to find someone else to take the helm, since the series seemed to do well for them, and got fans buzzing. We'll just have to wait and see.
