The "Fast" franchise is truly taking over the world, including on Netflix. According to Variety, the streamer has ordered an animated "Fast and Furious" series as the first series under an expansion of Netflix's multi-year deal with DreamWorks Animation Television.
The animated series has a new lead character -- teen Tony Toretto -- who follows in the footsteps of his cousin Dom (Vin Diesel in the films). Tony and friends are recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination.
Vin Diesel and two other producers of the live-action "Fast and Furious" movies will serve as executive producers on the animated series.
And now for some statements:
Melissa Cobb, vice president of kids and family for Netflix: "We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures. The 'Fast & Furious' franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can't wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humor and global appeal of the feature films."
Margie Cohn, president of DreamWorks Animation Television: "We are excited to extend and expand our successful relationship with Netflix by not only delivering more high-quality DreamWorks programming, but connecting fans of Universal films with fascinating new stories. Our new home at Universal marks an exciting new chapter for storytelling at our studio, and Fast & Furious is only the beginning."
The animated series showrunners will be Tim Hedrick (DreamWorks' "Voltron: Legendary Defender") and Bret Haaland (DreamWorks' "All Hail King Julien" and "The Penguins of Madagascar").
There's no premiere date at this point.
Meanwhile, the live-action franchise is still chugging along, with the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff coming out in 2019, "Fast & Furious 9" now scheduled for 2020, and "Fast 10" in 2021.
