Irish actor Pierce Brosnan seemed like a natural fit for James Bond, the suave British spy he played in four films throughout the '90s and early 2000s. But Brosnan doesn't agree, revealing in a recent interview that he can't bring himself to watch the movies anymore because his performance is "just never good enough."
The actor made those startling statements while speaking with the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph, admitting that while the stardom the franchise brought him afforded him the freedom to pursue passion projects and start a production company, he was never quite comfortable in the role.
"I felt I was caught in a time warp between Roger [Moore] and Sean [Connery]," Brosnan said. "It was a very hard one to grasp the meaning of, for me. The violence was never real, the brute force of the man was never palpable. It was quite tame, and the characterisation didn't have a follow-through of reality, it was surface. But then that might have had to do with my own insecurities in playing him as well. ... I have no desire to watch myself as James Bond. 'Cause it's just never good enough."
But while Brosnan said that that realization is "a horrible feeling," he added that his aversion to his Bond portrayal hasn't stopped him from pursuing similar characters and films in the spy and action genres.
"There's enough time between my being James Bond and now," he told the Telegraph. "Daniel [Craig] is James Bond; I was James Bond; I think there's enough room on the stage to elbow my way in and find some audience."
