There may not be an official start date yet for his new gig as David Letterman's replacement on "The Late Show," but Stephen Colbert will soon be able to introduce himself to the show's audience when he makes an appearance on the program next week.

CBS just announced that Colbert will stop by "The Late Show" next Tuesday, April 22 to chat with Letterman. It will be Colbert's first official interview since accepting the job last week.

Letterman announced his plan for retirement earlier this month, telling viewers that he would step down from the show he created when his contract expires in 2015. Colbert's name was quickly circulated as a possible replacement, and CBS announced their selection of the "Colbert Report" host only one week later.

"Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career," Colbert said in a statement last week. "I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead. I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

Colbert has signed a five-year deal with the network, though it's still unclear when exactly he'll start his new job. Maybe he and Letterman will discuss more specific timetables when they sit down with each other next week.
