The 'How I Met Your Mother' Finale Cut Robin Sparkles, Among Other Things

how i met your mother finale robin sparkles

If, like me, you were pretty unhappy with Monday's series finale of "How I Met Your Mother," the revelation that several key scenes were cut -- including one featuring Robin Sparkles -- might make you even more upset.

The news was shared by cast and crew members on Twitter and in interviews this week. Alyson Hannigan, who played Lily, tweeted that the episode was originally 18 minutes longer, and needed to be cut down considerably to fit into into allotted one-hour airtime.

But could those scenes have made a difference in the controversial ending, which featured the mother's (Cristin Milioti) offscreen death and Ted's (Josh Radnor) seemingly immediate race to reunite with Robin (Cobie Smulders)? Yes and no.

Some of the moments, shared by Hannigan and in behind-the-scenes photos by HIMYM prop master David Baker, included callbacks to running gags including the pineapple, Lily and Marshall's bet over whether or not Ted ends up with Robin, and the identity of "Number 31," a.k.a. the woman who gave birth to Barney's daughter.

While interesting and entertaining, those scenes would have been more in service to the fans' curiosity than to the show's overall plotline, so it makes sense that they were cut. But what about this one below, which Radnor recounted to Vulture? It certainly sounds like it would have had an impact on how fans interpreted the final episode of the series:

They cut a scene that Cobie and I shot between Ted and Robin. I thought it was a really important scene and I talked to Carter and Craig [Bays and Thomas, HIMYM's co-creators and co-showrunners] about it. I understand why they cut it, but I thought it laid in that Robin had been thinking about Ted all these years more than Ted had been thinking about Robin. But who knows? ... It was a scene after they ran into each other on the street. They had lunch the next day. I don't want to go too much into it because they obviously cut it for a reason, but I thought it was a really sweet and sad and funny scene.

And in what seems like the biggest wasted opportunity, another cut scene revealed by Baker involved none other than Robin Sparkles, Robin's teen Canadian pop star alter ego. The photo Baker shared revealed Smulders wearing Sparkles's signature acid-washed jean jacket over Robin's wedding dress, rocking the mic next to the mother and Sparkles's robot sidekick. We'd pay good money to see the final version of that scene.

It seems that all these moments and more will be waiting for fans once Season 9 eventually hits DVD and Blu-ray. But will they be enough to erase the bad taste the finale left in many of their mouths?

We'll have to wait and see. It's been a few days and I still need some cooling off; I doubt that's going to dissuade anytime soon. But watching Robin and the mother jam out to "Let's Go to the Mall" could change my mind.
