Fans of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" are coming out of the shadows to defend the DC title against harsh critical reviews. One of those fans is Batfleck himself.
Ben Affleck is now promoting "The Accountant," but he defended his Batman debut film in a new video interview with Fox 5 DC reporter Kevin McCarthy. (Watch the video below.) First, McCarthy fanboy'd out, showing off his BvS shoes and confessing that he "absolutely loved the movie" and saw it four times. But McCarthy also mentioned the negativity about BvS and wanted to get Affleck's take on it. Did he like the movie?
Good for him. He seemed a bit uncomfortable, stammering slightly at one point, but targeting complaints about the tone is a smart way to go. DC's dark, earnest tone is a lot of what separates it from Marvel, and it's something DC fans take pride in. To be fair, tone was NOT the only complaint about BvS by a long shot, but it is the easiest to defend, so if you're Batfleck and it's your job to back the franchise, that's what you do. That said, the chairman and CEO of Time Warner hinted to "more lightness" in the DC movies ahead, so there may be some mixed messages out there.Affleck: "It's interesting. It was a huge hit movie that more people went to see than any movie I've ever made in my career. This was the biggest hit of my career. And then it had a lot editorial negativity, although I think the reviews were sort of --"
McCarthy: "The fans liked it."
Affleck: "Fans went, and they got a lot of positive response. It was interesting, that movie, because it was judged not necessarily on execution so much as on its tone. People seemed to want to have a lighter tone to the movie, and I thought that was interesting because it's subjective. Tone is not a qualitative thing. It's subjective, right? Some tones resonate with me that might not with you. And the tone of the movie was really parallel to the Frank Miller book, which I liked and thought was great. I'm glad that so many people went and so many people liked the movie. It worked out."
McCarthy: "Did you like it?"
Affleck: "Yeah, I loved it."
