Nicolas Cage Wants to Be DC's Joker, Or Play a Marvel Villain

It's slightly shocking that Nicolas Cage hasn't already played a comic book supervillain.

Cage only just got to play Superman, after decades as the biggest superfan. And even then he only got to voice the guy. At 54, he now seems to think he's past his expiration date as a comic book superhero. (Guess he didn't know 50s are the new 20s -- just ask Robert Downey Jr., Keanu Reeves, Tom Cruise, Vin Diesel...)

However, Cage did tell JoBlo he thinks he'd make a great villain -- especially the Joker or Doctor Doom. Here's that part of the interview:

Are there any comic book roles out there now that you're itching to play or any characters that you're super into that you'd be interested in?

I mean, I think my comic book days are kind of...I'm on to other things, but I always thought I'd make a great Joker and I always thought that I would've been a good villain in one of the Marvel [movies] like Doctor Doom. But, Doctor Doom you have to wear that mask, but I thought the story leading up to Doctor Doom could've been interesting. At this point if I was to go back into the format it would probably have to be as a villain.

Man, now that you've said "Nicolas Cage Joker" I'm not gonna be able to get that out of my head. That needs to happen somehow...

It would be the perfect one for me to go even more off the rails than I've ever done before and, y'know, it'd be fun.

Nic Cage going even more off the rails than usual? Yes, please.

Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly in talks for his own Joker standalone at DC. But that doesn't mean they couldn't find another Joker role for Cage -- in the DCEU as an older version of Jared Leto's Joker, or under the new non-DCEU banner.

If DC can't find a place for him, it would be great to see him as a Marvel villain. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is primed for The Crazy Cage treatment.

Interesting that his thoughts went to Doctor Doom, though. That's the second "Fantastic Four" suggestion of the past week, after John Krasinski agreed it would be cool to play Mr. Fantastic opposite his wife Emily Blunt as the Invisible Woman.

If those three actors really do want to sign on for another "Fantastic Four" movie .. that would be the only reason to do it, but it would be enough. The Fantastic Four are Marvel characters, but they've been getting the Fox movie treatment. Better to wait for Disney/Marvel to finish buying 20th Century Fox before moving forward on any "Fantastic Four" ideas.

Still down for Cage as the Joker, though. Or, as we suggested before, we wouldn't say no to Nic Cage as the new Lex Luthor. Or send him over to "Wonder Woman 2." Or the next "Spider-Man Homecoming" movie. Or Shuri's standalone whenever she gets one. Just tag him in.
