Darth Vader Almost Killed a Major Character in 'Rogue One'

Rogue OneDarth Vader only has a couple scenes in "Rogue One," but one of them was originally supposed to be very different.

Vader shows what a total badass he is in the second scene where — spoiler alert — he mows down a bunch of Rebel soldiers. But that scene was added late in production. In the original script, as screenwriter Gary Whitta told Entertainment Weekly Vader was supposed to kill Director Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn).

In the final version of "Rogue One," Krennic dies on Scarif when the Death Star blasts the planet. But in Whitta's first draft, several characters escape Scarif, including Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor (a happier ending for the heroes) — and Krennic.

Krennic somehow survives the blast and is rescued by Imperial forces ("it's a bit of a reach," Whitta admitted).

"He survived the blast and they pulled him up and brought him to the Star Destroyer to report to Vader," Whitta explained. "He's all beat up, his cape's all torn up and stuff, and he thinks he has survived."

Instead, Krennic finds it very hard to breathe — an unseen Force chokes him. "Vader kills him for his failure."
