Michael Phelps is such a dominant swimmer that now he'll exclusively be racing sharks. Okay, that's not true, but he will be joining Shark Week this year.
Discovery has announced that the longtime Olympics standout will appear in the opening night of Shark Week 2017, as Deadline reports. The network hasn't revealed what exactly his role will be, though, so for all we know, he will be racing sharks. That certainly would take things to "another level," as Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav promised during an upfront presentation in New York City on Wednesday.
"When you think about world-class swimmers, I think two things come to mind. Sharks. And Michael Phelps," Zaslav said. "And Michael Phelps will be part of Shark Week on opening night, where he'll be aligning with the sharks and we're going to have a lot of fun with him."
The week of shark-centric programming hits Discovery every summer, educating the public about the oceanic creatures, not to mention probably scaring thousands of beach goers out of the water. This year, Shark Week begins on July 23, and we can't wait to see what Discovery and Phelps have in store for us.
