The new "Jumanji" movie is getting a technology update.
Footage shown at CinemaCon revealed that the not-a-reboot update of the beloved 1995 film will feature a video game that traps its players instead of a board game.
Star Dwayne Johnson presented the clip, which begins with four high school students in detention. As punishment, they have to clean out the school's basement, where they discover an old video game console. Each student picks a character to play and suddenly, they're transported to the jungle as those characters.
Those avatars are embodied by Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black. The nerdy kid is delighted to find himself sporting Johnson's buff physique, while the popular girl is horrified to be in Black's body.
"I was a fan of the original movie, and I felt like this [update] really honored it, and included a lot of the stuff that I loved about the original movie, but did it in a really new way," director Jake Kasdan told Deadline.
"It really holds up. You go back and watch it — it's a very unusual and original kid's movie. It's unusually scary and magical, in a way that's different from a lot of other magical kid's movies."
"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" opens in theaters December 22.
