The "Once Upon a Time" fairy tale is coming to an end.
ABC has decided to cancel the series, Variety reports. The show's co-creators, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, discussed the bad news with the publication, sharing that they're disappointed but glad that the show lasted for seven seasons.
"When we premiered, we premiered against the World Series and football and we were literally every critic's first pick to be canceled," Kitsis said. "So the fact that we are now 156 episodes later, I feel like we have nothing to complain about. We have had a great run."
When Season 7 kicked off, Kitsis and Horowitz knew "Once Upon a Time" might only last one more season given the major overhaul they'd done after Season 6. In fact, they prepared for ABC to opt against renewing the show. (A move to Fridays is never ideal.)
"We knew this was a distinct possibility from the moment the season started," Horowitz said. "So it has always sort of been in the back of our minds designing things to wrap up the end of this year if need be."
There are still eight more episodes to go before the series ends, and the co-creators promised they'll bring surprises. When asked whether or not any original characters will return, however, they noted that they didn't want to redo what they already did.
"There's a chance that a few familiar faces from the original will be back, but we are very conscious of not wanting to take away the happy endings we gave last year," Kitsis told Variety.
Fans will have to contend with more goodbyes, but they can at least know that they have been very much appreciated. Horowitz tweeted about ending the series on Tuesday and was sure to thank the loyal fan base.
"Their fierce loyalty and devotion was the real magic behind ONCE UPON A TIME," he wrote in part.
