Cruel James Gunn casually broke hearts in the middle of a thread about porgs.
The "Guardians of the Galaxy" and sequel director weighed in on a tweet asking fans to save one -- a "Star Wars" Porg or Marvel favorite Groot. In the middle of his arguments, Gunn revealed that the first Groot of "Guardians" Vol. 1 died, and the Baby Groot of Vol. 2 was his child.
That was news to many fans, who figured Groot was the same Groot, just changed.
Here's that part of the convo, to start:
First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.

Fans were shook. And Gunn was irritated by everyone being surprised by stuff we (apparently) should already know.
really? I thought he was kind of a clone.... like Barbra Streisand's dogs. I AM LEARNING.
— Ash Crossan (@AshCrossan) February 27, 2018
Well... when it comes to talking trees the difference between clone and son is minimal.

Color me shocked. I'm going to tell this little fun fact to my friends we go watch Infinity War.
— Ali Slate (@glittergeekali) February 27, 2018
James pls don't do this
— Falcoholic Matt (@FalcoholicMatt) February 27, 2018
I did it a long time ago.
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 27, 2018
Oh wow, thats a new one! Will we get any of that referenced in film? Is that why Baby Groots personality is so different from "first" Groot?

JESUS CHRIST... Find your chill, James Gunn. pic.twitter.com/yIDWh0mzhq

That's just facts!
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 27, 2018
jk rowling ruined everything and now non-canon bullshit can just be tweeted ad hominem
— Jennifer C. Martin (@notreallyjcm) February 27, 2018
It's canon AF (and it's in the movies).
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 27, 2018
He doesn't have adult Groot's memories for one. Adult Groot would know what button to push!
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) February 27, 2018
Great, now I have to go home and tell my three year old son that Groot is Dead.
— Alex Zalben (@azalben) February 27, 2018
Look let's be real, we all knew this but none of us wanted to believe it's true. https://t.co/9Y7kJxMpaG
— Eric Ravenscraft (@LordRavenscraft) February 27, 2018
I don't think I'm alone in saying barely anyone knew this. It's never explained at all or even hinted at in the movies. lol.

I am flooded with such complex emotions, a mixture of when I first learned that Santa is not real and that scene where Bambi's mother was shot and that moment in time when @realDonaldTrump was elected. https://t.co/nZ2UVvkjX2

The internet is like Groundhog Day every time I point out first Groot died. Baby Groot has a different personality, a different body, no memories of adult Groot & adult Groot's sacrifice actually meant something. New round of news stories & collective gasping again & again. https://t.co/gvx7c0g2fF

.@TwitterSupport I want to report @JamesGunn's account for harassment pic.twitter.com/KlMSCuUiUM

Some people seemed to already know. Fine. But since it was never quite spelled out so bluntly before this Twitter thread pitting cute fantasy creatures against each other, many did not know.
The "Guardians" will return in "Avengers: Infinity War," opening May 4.
