'Black Panther' Has Biggest Monday in Box Office History For $242 Million Total

"Black Panther" continues to leap over box office records by posting the biggest Monday in history.

The Marvel superhero flick earned $40.2 million yesterday, inching past the $40.1 million earned by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Overall, the movie made $242 million over the long President's Day weekend; that four-day total vaults it over "The Last Jedi" and just behind "The Force Awakens."

Its three-day total of $201.8 million made "Black Panther" the fifth biggest domestic opening of all time, the biggest February opening (supplanting "Deadpool"), and the second-biggest for a superhero movie behind "The Avengers" ($207.4 million).

Not only was "Black Panther" a smash at the domestic box office, it cleaned up internationally as well, with a haul of $184.6 million through Monday. And it has yet to open in some of the biggest international markets, including China, Japan, and Russia.

That box office success smashed the already high expectations for the movie, which received a ton of advanced buzz and glowing reviews. And "Black Panther" received an A+ CinemaScore grade from audiences, making it one of only two Marvel movies with that top score ("The Avengers" is the other).
