Cross the March 7 premiere of "Heathers" off your calendar -- the show's debut has been delayed.
Paramount Network announced the decision Wednesday in response to the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14. Seventeen students and staff were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and more than a dozen others injured, allegedly at the hands of a former student. Given that "Heathers" deals with gun violence, the network felt the timing was wrong, as explained in a statement:
Paramount Network's original series "Heathers" is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society's most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence. While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the right thing to do is delay the premiere until later this year.
The show's Twitter account added a bit more information, including that "there are more important conversations happening right now that we do not want to distract from."
We believe in this show and we're bummed we won't be showing it all to you JUST yet, but there are more important conversations happening right now that we do not want to distract from.

Stay tuned. https://t.co/Sqy8LAr0uA
The show is based on the film "Heathers," a black comedy released in 1989 that follows popular high school student Veronica (Winona Ryder) as she becomes fed up with her friends. When she starts dating new student J.D. (Christian Slater), she gets swept up in his violent revenge on them, and then later his plot to attack the student body at large. While the TV show has made many changes, it sounds similar enough that we suspect the story will be controversial no matter when it premieres, especially given how many school shootings we've sadly seen in recent history.
Paramount has not yet announced a new "Heathers" premiere date.
