"Once Upon a Time" Season 7 is officially the final season, but it still has a lot of life left in it.
The story left off in December 2017 and finally returned with Episode 11 of 22 on Friday, March 2.
Show creators/executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz talked to Entertainment Weekly about what's ahead in the series finale:
Horowitz: "It's less about tying up every loose end, it's [more] about the feeling, and that's what we're really striving for, which is the feeling of 'Once Upon a Time.'"
Kitsis: "It's one last adventure. It's maybe seeing some old friends. It's saying goodbye to the show and being reminded of all the things we love — if it was the twist on fairy tales, if it was the romance, if it was the swashbuckling, or if it was the magic. The last two hours for us is less about tying it up in a bow and just getting to hear the song sung one more time."
EW said not to read that literally and expect another musical episode.
Kitsis: "The finale was going to be what we were going to do, and then we're just not doing cliffhanger."
Kitsis said they did have a pitch for a potential Season 8, if ABC had been interested, but they never got to the pitching stage. Kitsis joked that they'd "save it for the spinoff when the approach us in two years." He's kidding ... but they probably will save that pitch just in case.
It's possible fans will push for a revival at some point, even if it's just to get all of those loose ends tied up. It's not clear yet who will be returning for the big finale, but it's hoped that the Charmings will return, if not their daughter Emma Swan. (Jennifer Morrison had said she'd only return for one episode in Season 7, and that was Episode 2.)
The Season 6 finale would've been a great series finale, but loyal fans continued to watch into Season 7 and have grown to care about many of the new "soft reboot" characters.
Series filming hasn't wrapped yet, but the writers room is going dark after this week. Horowitz celebrated the bittersweet milestone with some tweets, including a gift from Captain Hook star Colin O'Donoghue:
Every day, #OnceUponATime 's @AnotherKatie regales us with Disney facts... on the writers' last day in the #OUAT writers room, this one brings a tear to all of us. pic.twitter.com/rgKha5h9by
