Britton has nabbed a starring role in the upcoming anthology series "Dirty John," Variety reports. The story centers in a real-life con man named John Meehan, whose exploits included a series of dark and toxic relationships with women. Britton's character, Debra Newall, is a single mom who was ensnared by Meehan and even ended up marrying him.
The anthology series stems from a six-part narrative series on Meehan that was published in the Los Angeles Times in the fall. Each part incorporated interviews with people whose lives were affected by Meehan, as well as information from investigators, lawyers, and other sources. The material also inspired the Times' "Dirty John" podcast.
Alexandra Cunningham is writing Bravo's "Dirty John" and will also executive produce. Britton will join her as an executive producer, along with Richard Suckle, Charles Roven, Mark Herzog, Christopher G. Cown, and Chris Argenitieri. The series comes from Universal Cable Productions, Los Angeles Times Studios, and Atlas Entertainment.
"Dirty John" already has a two-season order, so Bravo must have a good feeling about it. With Britton on board, we're optimistic, too. In addition to "American Horror Story" and "American Crime Story," her work includes starring roles in "9-1-1," "Nashville," "Friday Night Lights," and more.[via: Variety]
