Oscar nominee Margot Robbie ("I, Tonya") is working on an upcoming ABC anthology series based on the works of William Shakespeare.
The 10-part series will retell the Bard's stories from a modern female perspective, The Wrap reports. Each episode will be a standalone version of a famous Shakespeare play.
Of course, "10 Things I Hate About You," which was based on "The Taming of the Shrew," was already a TV series, but it's a likely candidate for an update.
We might also get "Hamlet" from Ophelia's point of view, "Othello" as told by Desdemona, "Macbeth" via Lady Macbeth, and "King Lear" with the focus on his youngest daughter, Cordelia.
"We are thrilled about this Australian partnership as an opportunity to showcase unique, distinctly female voices in writing, and to demonstrate the high quality of the Australian film and television industry," Robbie's production company LuckyChap said in a statement. "The project will share diverse points of view, from writers representing the different cultures and areas within Australia, which many would not readily associate with works of Shakespeare."
The series, which will hire women writers and directors, will be filmed and produced in Robbie's home country of Australia later this year. Disney Media Distribution will handle international distribution of the series outside of Australia. So yes, non-Aussies will get to see it too, just perhaps a bit later.
