There's a question almost as big as how "Game of Thrones" ends: Which of the show's stars can we actually trust to tell the truth when they're asked about the hit HBO fantasy drama?
While at the Cannes Film Festival Tuesday, Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) ostensibly opened up about the series' much anticipated final season. When asked about who will set on the Iron Throne when all is said and done, she told Variety that she still doesn't know. Additionally, she told the publication that she thinks "it will be what none of us think it will be."
The idea that Clarke doesn't know how the series ends is a little fishy. It isn't out of the realm of possibility, but it doesn't quite align with other information her co-stars have shared. In December, for example, Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) told EW that the cast had gathered for a table read of the entire season and that at the end of it, they were all "applauding and crying." To us, that sounds like the response of a group that knows how a show ends, not one that is still confused. Also conflicting are comments from Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) during a February appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live"; the actress told Kimmel that she had read all the scripts and knew the ending of "Game of Thrones."
What Clarke does have going for her is that HBO Programming President Casey Bloys has said in the past that they'll shoot multiple endings to keep the true conclusion a secret. Clarke previously backed him up, telling The Telegraph that more than one ending had been written. However, there is another inconsistency: Williams also implied to Kimmel that Bloys was lying when he announced this plan.
Unfortunately, we can't say for sure what's true and what's not. "Game of Thrones" has seen a lot of leaks in its time, so the cast has been known to fib on occasion to try to prevent spoilers. Regardless of whether or not Clarke truly doesn't know the show's ending, we bet it's going to be good.
"Game of Thrones" Season 8 will premiere in 2019.
