Jake Gyllenhaal Rumored to Play Villain Mysterio in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming 2'

Don't send Jake Gyllenhaal any Welcome to the MCU cards quite yet, but reports claim he's in talks to play Marvel villain Mysterio in the sequel to Tom Holland's "Spider-Man: Homecoming."

Both Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter "confirmed" the talks, but the original source seems to be a report out of the U.K. tabloid The Sun.

According to The Sun (via Express), Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio/Quentin Beck, who first appeared in Issue 13 of the 1964 comic "The Amazing Spider-Man." A source told The Sun producers "were keen" to sign Ryan Gosling "but he was busy filming another project." This not-very-complimentary source added, "Jake is a suitable alternative with experience of playing villainous characters."

Suitable alternative? Jake Gyllenhaal is a catch. They'll be lucky to have him, if they do indeed get him.

Deadline noted that Gyllenhaal almost played Spider-Man himself back in the Tobey Maguire days. Now he'll play Spidey's villain.

Speaking of Spider-Man, though, Stan Lee just went out of his way to praise Tom Holland, who was suitably flattered. They have a brewing bromance that hopefully continues through at least the next movie.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming 2" is scheduled for release in theaters on July 5, 2019.
