"Grey's Anatomy" has so many meaty stories ahead, we can't wait to just get back to it already.
The latest news, from TVLine, says Season 14's back half will include another episode directed by our fearless queen Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey). The site reported that the script is still being finalized, so it could change (like the gender of that upcoming doctor reportedly changed).
At least part of the episode is said to include a flashback to Dr. Alex Karev's (Justin Chambers) past. The show will bring in a new young star to play Alex, who had a seriously rough youth -- a drunk and drug-addict father, a mother with schizophrenia he had committed, 17 foster homes over the course of five years, time in juvie for stealing food for his family, etc. Like his lady love, Jo Wilson, Alex too changed his name. He dropped Evans and switched to Karev, his mother's maiden name, to distance himself from his father. (Alex also lost his virginity at age 15 to a school nurse, which ... eww.)
There's a lot of material to mine there, so we're eager to see how that episode shapes up. Sounds like only a portion will be about Alex, though, at least the way they phrased the idea at this point. TVLine said they'll work on that episode in January with an air date probably in March/April.
Meanwhile, when Season 14 returns on January 18, the midseason premiere -- Episode 9, "Four Seasons in One Day" -- will pick up right from that badly timed re-appearance of Dr. Paul Stadler (Matthew Morrison) right as Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) was trying to save Alex's patient. Jo's domestic abuse story is going to be faced head-on this season. Also, James Pickens Jr. (Dr. Richard Webber) told TVLine the Jackson (Jesse Williams) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) storyline will take a "hard left turn," whatever that means.
"Grey's Anatomy" Season 14 returns Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018 at 8 p.m. on ABC.
