Quentin Tarantino Developing 'Star Trek' Movie Idea With J.J. Abrams

GQ 'Men Of The Year' Party - InsideWill Quentin Tarantino boldly go where he's never gone before?

The auteur filmmaker, who's made a career of writing and directing his original material, has come up with an idea for a "Star Trek" movie, according to Deadline. And he's shared that idea with fellow director J.J. Abrams (currently working on "Star Wars: Episode IX").

Deadline also reports that the plan is to assemble a writers room at Paramount to expand on Tarantino's idea. Then, Abrams would produce the film ... and Tarantino might direct!

Abrams helped reboot the big-screen franchise with 2009's "Star Trek" and its follow-up, "Star Trek Into Darkness." He remains a producer on the current film series, even while he's entered the Lucasfilm universe with "The Force Awakens" and now "Episode IX."

But taking on a franchise would be new territory for Tarantino, who almost exclusively works on his own original projects. He has directed episodes of television shows ("CSI" and "ER"), but only ever mused about doing the same with movies like James Bond.

Still, in 2015, Tarantino did say he was more likely to direct a "Star Trek" movie over "Star Wars."

"You could take some of the classic 'Star Trek' episodes and easily expand them to 90 minutes or more and really do some amazing, amazing stuff," he said.

If this "Star Trek" scheme does happen, it won't be for awhile; Tarantino is in pre-production on his next film, reportedly set amidst the Manson Family murders and set for release on August 9, 2019, the 50th anniversary of Sharon Tate's killing.
