The actor playing Prince Philip is more worried than thrilled for Meghan Markle.
Matt Smith plays the husband of Claire Foy's Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix's "The Crown," which streams Season 2 this Friday, Dec. 8. There's an interesting art-meets-life connection, in that the first season of "The Crown" dealt with the monarchy rejecting two royal marriages to divorced loved ones, and now Prince Harry is marrying divorcée Meghan Markle.
Claire Foy focused on that positive angle in a talk with Vanity Fair:
"You realize the fact that Elizabeth forbade her sister from marrying a divorced man; it goes to show how time has changed and how they've had to evolve. And they really have. This would not have been conceivable, this would not have happened 50 years ago. And I think that's why the monarchy will survive, and thrive, because it's willing to change and listen to the people and realize that some elements of the institution are outdated and unnecessary."
Matt Smith had a more cynical take, focusing on the burdens of public life as a royal:
"I feel sorry for her," Smith told Vanity Fair of Meghan Markle. "It's such a transition in her life, and it's such a huge thing to take on. Life as she knows it is gone. But hey, she's marrying the prince of Britain -- how exciting for her."
Yeah, that end sentence comes across as a bit sarcastic. It is exciting, though, not just that she's marrying a prince, but also -- more importantly -- that she's marrying the man she loves. This is not exactly the cold, arranged marriage of royal families. And times really have changed.
Harry's older brother Prince William has shown in his marriage to Kate Middleton that modern royals don't have to do things the way others have done. They can live relatively normal lives while also being very famous. Sounds like the status quo of most A-list actors/singers/athletes, and the "Suits" actress probably knows exactly what she's signing up for.
This royal wedding is set for May 2018. "The Crown" Season 1 is now available for streaming on Netflix (and highly recommended) with Season 2 starting Friday, Dec. 8.
