A new "Stargate" series is on its way, but with some serious limitations. "Stargate Origins" will be available only through a dedicated subscription-based platform called Stargate Command. And the episodes will be only 10 minutes each, according to THR.
The new series, which was announced Thursday night at a Comic-Con panel, will focus on the young Catherine Langford. The fan favorite was played in "Stargate SG1" by the now-90-year-old Elizabeth Hoffman and in the 1994 film by Viveca Lindfors, with the young Catherine in the film being played by Kelly Vint Castro.
In the teaser trailer, we see a young Catherine in Egypt in 1928 as the first portal is erected by her archaeologist father -- all footage from the 1994 film.
In addition to "Stargate Origins," subscribers will have access to previous "Stargate" series, (although it's not clear if that means all 380 episodes from the franchise) and offer a behind-the-scenes look at the new series. The teaser trailer also promises that footage from the 1994 film that started it all will soon be available on Stargate Command.
"We've been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure," said Kevin Conroy, president of digital and new platforms at MGM. "We view 'Stargate Origins' as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years."
Production will begin in August and the series will launch in the fall.
