Surprising no one, "The Emoji Movie," which was not screened for critics, is getting the most savage reviews of the year. It's currently got a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, with not one single positive review.
Perhaps the most upbeat assessment comes from The Washington Post's Lindsay Bahr, who proclaims it "not evil... just 'meh.'"
Here are the most brutal critiques:
Glenn Kenny, New York Times: "Nakedly idiotic."
Charles Bramesco, The Guardian: "A viewer leaves 'The Emoji Movie' a colder person, not only angry at the film for being unconscionably bad, but resentful of it for making them feel angry."
Vadim Rizov, AV Club: "'Inside Out' crossed with a Sony commercial and dunked in toxic ooze."
Emily Yoshida, New York Magazine/Vulture: "One of the darkest, most dismaying films I have ever seen, much less one ostensibly made for children."
David Ehrlich, indieWire: "Almost as bad and brutally depressing as everything else in 2017."
Alonso Duralde, The Wrap: "Lacks humor, wit, ideas, visual style, compelling performances, a point of view or any other distinguishing characteristic that would make it anything but a complete waste of your time."
Matt Prigge, Metro: "The Poochie of movies."
Roger Moore, Movie Nation: "New low for the year and possibly for the rest of this decade if there aren't as many cringeworthy movies in the near future. The crew behind this embarrassment that you call a movie will probably regret working on this a few years later when it comes to that time. If you give this movie your money, you should feel ashamed of yourself."
At least people are reserving sympathy for Patrick Stewart, who voices the Poop emoji. This is the one, people. The one that broke me, hard. https://t.co/03f8pfnq2M
