Margaret Atwood's 'Alias Grace' Trailer Tackles Murder in New Netflix Adaptation

Alias GraceOn the heels of the rousing success of Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale," Netflix is getting into the Margaret Atwood game with an adaptation of her novel "Alias Grace."

The historical fiction tale centers on Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon), an Irish immigrant in Canada who was convicted of a double homicide. She and a stablehand were accused of murdering their employer and his housekeeper. But Dr. Simon Jordan (Edward Holcroft) becomes personally involved in her case as he researches criminal behavior and wonders: Is Grace a cold-blooded murderess? A pawn? An innocent witness?

Much like "The Handmaid's Tale," "Alias Grace" explores themes of how women are treated in society, the male gaze, class structure, sexuality, and memory.

The novel was adapted by Sarah Polley and the six-episode miniseries directed by Mary Herron ("American Psycho"). It also stars Anna Paquin, Zachary Levi, and Paul Gross.

"Alias Grace" will air in Canada and begin streaming Friday, Nov. 3 on Netflix.
