The first three seasons of "Black Mirror" were about as bold and breakthrough as you could want, so the idea that Season 4 will be even more ambitious in terms of new genres and "quite a few surprises"? Give it to our brains now!
"Black Mirror" executive producers Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones just had a great talk with Variety's "Remote Controlled" podcast, revealing they are nearing the end of Season 4's shoot, working on the sixth episode of the Netflix series. Asked what they could tease about Season 4, Jones offered something suitably vague:
"I think you can say there's a range of genres within the season, and more ambitious, could I say? Slightly more ambitious in scope. We've ventured into genres we haven't been into before. So quite a few surprises, I'd say."
Without spoiling anything, Variety asked, could they reveal one of the genres they're tackling this year?
"Unpleasantness?" Brooker quipped.
They said they want to retain the surprises and keep fans guessing. They also noted fans have come to expect and look for twists, even though that was never their intention. They gave Season 2's "White Bear" as an example, saying subsequently people have watched episodes waiting for the twists to come, even though other episodes -- like Season 3's "Nosedive" -- have no twists.
Speaking of "White Bear," apparently that's one story that could potentially have a sequel, although it sounds like that might not be on the table for Season 4 itself. Here's more from Brooker:
"We've had ideas for sequels to stories as well, which is something we haven't entirely explored. I wouldn't be averse to it. There's a couple of ideas already in mind but we're sort of thinking about practically how we could do that and when the right time to do that would be. Potentially."
Netflix has yet to reveal the premiere date for "Black Mirror" Season 4. Season 3 arrived last October, but we may have to wait longer for Season 4.
